The Book of Imaginary Beings is as amazing as the creatures it describes, and perhaps the clearest and most concentrated example of what I consider as the very essence of Borges’ writing: simultaneous seriousness and joy. Borametz, “vegetable lamb of Tartary” is a plant shaped as a lamb, covered with golden fleece.
I chose to illustrate it, along with the Moonfish – Animals That Live in the Mirror, as glimpses of hispanic culture found in the cabinet of curiosities of a collector of fantastic creatures. Both were present in the exhibition of the Illustrators’ Club at the Cervantes Institute in Bucharest.
